Stokas Inc. undertook the design and complete renovation of a corner maisonette located in the area of Ymittos, Athens.
The apartment, originally built in 1958, reflected the spatial requirements of its time, with a layout defined by corridors surrounding the main living areas—resulting in fragmented spaces that appeared smaller. However, the high double-leaf windows and the generous ceiling height were among the building’s most distinctive features.
During the design process, the architectural proposal evolved through several stages, as the age of the structure limited the extent of structural interventions. The inability of the existing infrastructure to support major modifications required the implementation of specialized construction techniques.
The core design concept focused on creating an open, unified space within the existing structural shell, with the primary goal of enhancing spatial continuity and fostering a warm, family-oriented environment.
Suspended benches around the living area play a key role in this approach, with the fireplace acting as the central focal point. This layout allows for flexibility in furniture arrangement while reinforcing a sense of cohesion, tailored to the needs of the residents.
The Scandinavian aesthetic dominates the main living areas, where the high windows, the rich brown tones of the wooden flooring and staircase, and the soft white and light grey hues of the walls are complemented by the grey stone texture of the kitchen, creating a calm and welcoming atmosphere. The same palette of colors and materials is consistently applied in the bedrooms.
In the two bathrooms, natural materials are used, with combinations of marble and wood in varying tones, contributing to the overall sense of harmony and refinement of the residence.
